“I’ll be waiting for you.” For the next two hours those words rang in Mary’s ears. As she waited for noon to come, she found herself wondering when exactly she had changed from a healthy, well-adjusted woman to a masochistic person who thrived on self-torture. Offering to take the prescription to the Taylors’ house could only be a symptom signaling her descent into some kind of madness.

Still, at 12:17 she stood in the drugstore, waiting for the prescription to be filled. Despite the fact that she told herself over and over again she would just hand Jonathon the medicine, then be on her way once again, she couldn’t help the adrenaline that pumped through her at the thought of seeing him once again.

She ran through a driving rain from the drugstore to her car, cursing the foul weather that frizzled her hair and dampened her clothes. Glancing at her reflection in the rearview mirror, she scowled. She looked like a drowned rat.

Why hadn’t she worn something different to work today? Why had she yanked on the boring brown slacks and plain white blouse? Why hadn’t she worn the red blouse that always brought compliments from her co-workers?

She tightened her hands on the steering wheel. It doesn’t matter, she told herself forcefully. I’ll just drop off the medicine at the door and get back in my car and drive home. He won’t care what I’m wearing. It doesn’t matter how I look. All he wants is the medicine for Annie and that’s it.

By the time she reached the Taylor house, the rain was a torrential downpour. She remained in her car for a few minutes, but when the rain showed no signs of abating, she grabbed her purse, drew in a deep breath and plunged out of the car. She reached the porch soaked through. Immediately the door flew open and Jonathon pulled her inside.

“Whoa, what a toad strangler,” he exclaimed.

“Thank goodness I’m not a toad,” she replied.

He laughed and took the small sack that held the prescription from her. “I would have never agreed to you doing this had I known it would be coming down so bard.” He frowned. “You definitely need to get out of those wet clothes.” His smoke-colored eyes radiated concern.

Mary’s heart convulsed in her chest and she fought the impulse to strip naked then and there. Oh, this man had a wondrous effect on her libido. “I’m fine….” She backed toward the door, afraid she’d do something stupid.

“Please.” He grabbed her arm, his smile warm and friendly. “The least I can do to thank you is get you dry and offer you a hot cup of coffee before sending you back out into that mess. Come on.” He pulled her through the foyer and past the living room, into a bedroom that was obviously his. He disappeared into a connecting bathroom, then reappeared carrying a large navy terry-cloth robe. “You can put this on and I’ll throw your wet things into the dryer. While you’re changing, I’ll give Annie her medicine and make a fresh pot of coffee.
